In Douala the offer is abundant and uneven. This guide gives you concrete criteria for comparing seriously, whichever centre you end up choosing.

Start from your goal, not from the language

The first mistake is to enrol on “English classes” or “German classes” without having stated what you want to do with them. Yet the right programme differs from case to case.

A certification goal (IELTS, TOEFL, TCF, DELF, Goethe, CILS, HSK) requires preparation targeted at the format of the test, not just a general course.

Un objectif professionnel calls for trade vocabulary and a great deal of speaking.

A mobility goal — studies or work abroad — imposes a precise level, required by the destination country, with a deadline.

Un objectif personnel allows more freedom over pace and format.

State your goal in one sentence before your first appointment. A good academic adviser will steer you differently depending on the answer — and a centre that does not ask the question deserves your suspicion.

Check the centre’s accreditation

In Cameroon, vocational training establishments come under the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training (MINEFOP). An accredited centre is registered with the ministry and its accreditation carries a verifiable order number.

Ask for that number. A serious centre gives it without hesitation and usually displays it on its premises and its website. PVT Institut, for example, is accredited under order No. 00630/MINEFOP/SG/DFOP/SDGSF/CSACD/CBAC of 20 October 2025.

For a concrete example of what an accreditation covers and the training it governs, see the presentation of PVT Institut in Rails-Bonaberi.

Accreditation alone does not guarantee teaching quality, but its absence is a warning sign: it means the establishment is not recognised as a vocational training body.

Look at the structure of the programme, not just the price

A low fee can hide a small number of hours, and a high fee guarantees nothing. The useful questions lie elsewhere:

How levels are divided

A serious programme is structured on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. Each level corresponds to described competences, not an arbitrary duration. Ask how many weeks a level covers and how many units it represents.

What is included

Registration fees, textbooks, exercise materials, exam fees: these are sometimes quoted separately. Ask for the full cost through to the end of the level you are targeting. Some centres include the textbooks; others charge for them.

Group size

In a language, speaking is the limiting factor. A group of thirty mechanically reduces your speaking time. Ask how many learners there are on average per room.

Check that the timetable fits your actual life

Many drop-outs come not from a lack of motivation but from an unworkable schedule. If you work, a daytime course will not hold. If you are a pupil or a student, evening classes or holiday courses are often more realistic.

So look at whether the centre offers several formats: day courses, evening courses, holiday courses, online follow-up. Flexibility counts as much as the quality of the course itself.

Unsure about the level or the format? PVT Institut’s trainers will guide you after a simple conversation, with no obligation.

See courses and fees

Location matters more than people think

A language course only works if it is attended regularly. In Douala, most centres are concentrated in Akwa, Bonanjo or Bonamoussadi. For a learner living on the Bonaberi side, that means crossing the Wouri bridge several times a week, often at peak hours.

Do the maths honestly: how much travel time, how many times a week, for how many weeks? A slightly less well-known centre reachable in ten minutes will often produce better results than a prestigious one you stop attending after a month.

Ask how progress is assessed

A structured programme includes interim assessments. Without them, there is no way to know whether you have genuinely moved from one level to the next, or merely attended sessions.

Ask: is there a placement test on entry? An assessment at the end of each level? A certificate of completion? These matter if you later have to evidence your level to a university or an employer.

If you are aiming at a certification, check the specific preparation

Preparing for IELTS, the TCF or the Goethe-Zertifikat is not the same as learning the language. These exams have their own format, mark scheme and time pressure. A candidate with a good level can score poorly simply because they discover the paper on the day.

So check whether the centre offers dedicated preparation for each exam, and over what period. A one-month intensive format built around the real format of the test is generally more effective than a general course spread over a year. To find out more, see our page on international exam preparation.

Five questions to ask before signing

What is your MINEFOP accreditation number?

Combien de semaines et combien d’heures couvre un niveau ?

What exactly does the quoted fee include?

How many learners per group on average?

How will my progress be assessed?

A centre that answers these five questions clearly already tells you a good deal about how serious it is.

In summary

The right centre is not the biggest or the cheapest: it is the one whose programme matches your goal, whose timetable fits into your week, and whose accreditation and teaching structure you can verify. Take the time to compare on those criteria rather than on a poster.

PVT Institut teaches English, French, German, Italian and Chinese in Rails-Bonaberi, with day, evening, holiday and online formats.
