TCF, TEF, DELF, DALF, TEFAQ: the acronyms multiply and candidates are frequently misdirected. Here is how to choose according to your actual plan.

Test or diploma: a distinction that changes everything

This is the first thing to understand, and it explains most of the confusion.

The TCF and the TEF are tests. They measure your level at a given moment and issue a certificate with a limited validity period. You do not “pass” them: you obtain a result.

The DELF and the DALF are diplomas. They certify a specific CEFR level, are passed or failed, and are valid for life.

That difference already steers the choice: for an immigration file requiring a recent certificate, a test is right. To give lasting value to a level on a CV or an academic record, a diploma is more useful.

Le TCF et ses versions

The Test de connaissance du français exists in several variants depending on the intended use. The version required is not the same for a university application, a permanent residence application to Canada, or a nationality procedure.

This is where candidates most often go wrong: they sit “the TCF” without checking which version their file demands, and the certificate is refused. Before registering, read the written requirement of the receiving body and note the exact name of the test.

What the TCF assesses

Depending on the version: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, language structures, written expression and spoken expression. Results are expressed in CEFR levels, skill by skill.

As with IELTS, it is often the lowest mark that decides the outcome. A candidate excellent in writing but weak in speaking can be blocked despite a satisfactory average.

Le TEF

The Test d’évaluation de français plays a comparable role, with its own versions depending on the purpose — notably for Canadian procedures. Here too the rule is identical: the version counts as much as the result.

Between the TCF and the TEF, the choice is rarely made on teaching grounds. It depends on what your destination accepts, the sessions available and the deadlines. Both are recognised in the procedures that name them.

A Canadian plan, a university application, a visa file? The test is chosen from the written requirement of your destination.

See our French exam preparation

The DELF and the DALF

The DELF covers levels A1 to B2, the DALF levels C1 and C2. Each diploma corresponds to a single level: you register for the DELF B2, you sit it, you obtain it or you do not.

All four skills are assessed and a minimum overall mark is required, with a floor mark in each paper. A DELF B2 is often required for entry to French-speaking universities and is a solid, permanent reference.

For a francophone Cameroonian candidate the DELF can seem superfluous — but a recognised diploma is worth more than undocumented schooling in French when the foreign body does not know the local system.

How to prepare a French test when you already speak French

This is the central question for many Cameroonian candidates, and the answer is surprising: speaking fluently is not enough to obtain a good score.

The language of the exam is not the language of daily life

The papers assess standard French, with registers, logical connectors and academic structures. Spontaneous speech relies on turns of phrase that earn no marks in writing.

The format drives the result

Number of questions, timing, task types: a native speaker who is poorly prepared can miss half a section simply through bad time management.

Written expression has to be worked on

This is where francophone candidates lose the most marks: structure of the argument, spelling, range and precision of vocabulary. Regular outside marking is the most effective lever.

A simple method

Identify the exact name of the test your application requires, and its version.

Check the minimum score or level required, skill by skill.

Sit a full mock test to establish your starting point.

Work first on your lowest skill.

Book the session around result turnaround times and your application deadline.

In summary

The TCF and TEF are tests with limited validity, suited to administrative procedures; the DELF and DALF are lifelong diplomas, suited to giving lasting value to a level. In every case, the exact version your destination requires outranks any other consideration.

PVT Institut prepares candidates for the TCF-SO, DELF/DALF, TEF and other French exams in Rails-Bonaberi.
